
Steps
- Drain and rinse the soaked chickpeas.
- In a pressure cooker or pot, heat oil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in the ginger garlic paste and sauté for another minute.
- Add the soaked chickpeas and mix well.
- Sprinkle in the pepper powder, turmeric powder, chilly powder, and garam masala, stirring to coat the chickpeas.
- Add the clove, cardamom, cinnamon stick, and star anise.
- Pour in the tomato sauce and mix thoroughly.
- Add enough water to cover the chickpeas and season with salt.
- If using a pressure cooker, cover and cook for 3-4 whistles. If using a pot, cover and simmer until the chickpeas are tender, adding water as needed.
- Once cooked, remove the whole spices and serve hot with rice or bread.

- 1/2 cup white chickpeas (soaked overnight)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp pepper powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp chilly powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1 clove
- 1 cardamom pod
- 1 small piece of cinnamon stick
- 1 star anise
- 2 tbsp tomato sauce
- 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
- Salt to taste
- 1 tbsp oil
- Water as needed
